OUTING – Rogue Steelhead with David Haight

October 19, 2019

October Steelhead Outing Changed to October 3rd

The date of the outing to fish for steelhead on the Rogue River has been changed from October 19 to Thursday October 3.  This year we will try a different section of the river than we have done in past years.  We will head to the area around Shady Cove.  Steelhead densities should be higher, the water temperature better, and the chinook should be spawning in that section of the river then, which should improve our chances of catching fish.  We will meet in the large parking lot across the road from the Shady Cove boat ramp at 8:00 AM.

Having a driftboat, raft, or pontoon boat will provide more access to good water; however, there are several areas that provide good access to the river for those without a boat.  This outing is a good opportunity to introduce new members to the river, so I encourage members with driftboats to come and take some new anglers out for the day.  Participants should bring a six or seven-weight rod with a floating line, 3X leader, and flies.  Since the steelhead should be feeding on the eggs and nymphs dislodged by the salmon’s spawning activity, dead-drifting imitative patterns should be productive.  Effective patterns include Globugs, Hare’s Ears, Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Copper Johns, and stonefly nymphs.  Flies should be lightly weighted to get down near the bottom.  (Weight added to the line is not allowed.)  Those that prefer to swing flies can bring the equipment and flies for that.  Since we will be on the river most of the day, bring food and water, waders, rain gear, polarized glasses, and your typical fishing accessories.
